Virtual reality training modules

Available Training Modules for the Mining Industry:

Rib and Roof Stability Module

Rib and roof stability in an underground environment is a key hazard and if left unchecked or unreported can lead to serious injury or equipment loss. The module familiarises new starters with key safety issues relating to roof and rib in underground coal mines and key indicators of what to look for in assessing risks.

Truck Pre-Shift Inspection Module

The operation of heavy mining equipment requires the knowledge and competence of pre-shift operation procedures to ensure personnel safety and to prevent unnecessary damage to mining equipment. This module introduces new starters and experienced mine workers to key safety issues related to truck pre-shift inspection processes and truck and shovel operation.

Isolation Module

Isolation of energy sources that power equipment prior to carrying out work is essential for safe work in underground or surface mine environments. This module concentrates on identification of hazards, situations or actions that require the correct isolation procedures to be applied to allow safe repair of equipment faults.

Outburst Module

An ‘Outburst’ is the rapid and violent release of seam gas and coal/rock from a pressurised in situ environment, normally into a developing face. Both new starters and experienced mineworkers can experience this major event in the safety of the ‘virtual mine’, observe the aftermath, receive training in outburst indicators, legislation, detection, procedures and controls. This highly interactive module combines all aspects of adult learning and immersive training which cannot be taught in the real mine environment.

Hazard Awareness Module

To be hazard aware in an underground coal mine environment is a key safety issue and competency in this area must be demonstrated by mine workers. This module is aimed at new starters and as a refresher course, focused on familiarisation with key safety issues in underground coal mines.

Unaided Self Escape Module

This is an extremely important procedure where mine workers must demonstrate a high level of competency. This module provides workers an opportunity to respond to a belt fire and to evacuate the mine as a team. Decisions and choices are made along the escape route, forcing group discussion and allowing miners to build up emergency procedure experience.

Industry related modules

CSPL, the service provider for this Virtual Reality Training system can tailor specific VR Training programs for any industries that have training needs. For example, imagine training your fire brigade team to handle a specific hazardous situation in a safe virtual environment. This environment will even educate your team in understanding the key hazards and what to do to control the risks.

Spontaneous Combustion Module

All coals are susceptible to Spon Comb in certain situations. This module introduces new starters to the hazard, how it occurs - history of events – detection – prevention – control. It also enables experienced miners to apply the course detail in the ‘virtual mine’ environment under a variety of scenarios. The module allows for basic and advanced training for all levels of coal miners.

Deputy’s Module:

This module is specific to mine officials and provides a ‘virtual development panel environment’ which requires inspection to identify some thirty hazards, challenges and events. Events involve machinery, ventilation, roof and rib strata, procedures and people. The high level interaction of the participants in dealing with real life mine events and situations provides powerful learning whereby skill levels can be increased in the safe, immersive environment.
